Abstract

Forests store nutrients in the biomass of its compartments, which can be modified favorably through silvicultural treatments. The objective was to analyze the effect thinning in response to sivicultural treatments in a young Pinus pseudostrobus stand in San Pedro el Alto, Oaxaca, Mexico. In 2021, destructive sampling on herbaceous and bushy plants, necromass, litterfall, humus and root was carried out to quantify biomass, carbon (C) and nitrogen (N). A completely randomized design (DCA) was used for nutrients in biomass and a DCA with factorial arrangement for root analysis. An analysis of variance and Duncan tests were performed to compare means. The IA_BA treatment, which corresponds to a high thinning intensity (IA = 75 %) and high basal area (BA >14 m2 ha-1), with a density of 2083 trees per hectare, showed significant different with respect to the other treatments, specifically in the amount of N in litter and biomass in necromass. The total C in the IB_BA treatment, which has a low tinning intensity, with 11,80 t ha-1, distributed in litter (35,76 %), necromass (14,40 %) and humus (49,83 %). The highest root weight recorded was 9,6 g m-2, while the C content in roots reached 5,1 t ha-1 in the IA_BA treatment. Furthermore, thinning, soil depth and root thickness had significant effects on the root system, with a density of 17,6 fine roots per square meter under low thinning intensity (50 %) and basal area high area conditions, compared to the control, which had 9,6 fine roots per square meter at a depth of 15 cm. Biomass and nutrients are affected by the intensity of thinning as well as site conditions.
